3 deep cleaning tips for Sudbury homeowners during lockdown

Keeping your house germ-free is sure to be a top priority at the moment. So, to help you out we’ve found 3 deep cleaning tips to keep your Sudbury home in mint condition through lockdown and beyond.

  1. Preserve essential appliances

Replacing kitchen appliances is a disruption you could definitely do without these days. Get the most out of them whilst saving money for other essential projects, like essential home improvements, by maintaining them with these helpful deep cleaning tips.

  • Remove limescale from your washing machinelarge stone house

You will need:

  • 2 cups white vinegar
  • ½ cup baking soda

Add 2 cups of white vinegar in place of your usual washing detergent and run the machine empty, on the hottest wash. Repeat the cycle with ½ a cup of baking soda for a thorough deep clean. Repeat this process every 3-6 months to retain its performance for longer.

  • Eliminate dishwasher limescale

You will need:

  • ½ cup white vinegar
  • ½ cup lemon juice
  • 1 cup baking soda
  • Dishwasher-safe container

At least once a year, remove the dishwasher’s bottom rack and clear any food or grime away to improve its drainage. Using a dishwasher-safe container, combine ½ a cup of white vinegar with ½ a cup of lemon juice, place it on the top rack and run the empty machine on a hot-water cycle. Once the cycle is complete, sprinkle 1 cup of baking soda on the bottom of the machine and run it again on a short, hot-water cycle. You should be left with a dishwasher that looks and smells great!

  • Deep clean your oven

You will need:

  • ½ cup baking powder
  • 3 tbsp water
  • White vinegar
  • Pastry brush / new paint brush
  • Spray bottle

First, remove and clean your oven shelves thoroughly. Combining the baking soda with the water, spread the paste inside the oven, taking care to avoid covering the heating elements. Leave it overnight (at least 12 hours) and then thoroughly wipe off with a damp cloth, removing any excess residue by spraying white vinegar into the corners and around the edges. Once all the residue is completely removed, give your oven a final wipe down and replace the shelves. Keen cooks should repeat this process every 3 months, or occasional cooks can get away with a deep clean once or twice a year.

  1. Make your uPVC windows, doors, and glazed extensions sparkle

You will need:

  • Distilled white vinegar
  • Warm water
  • Non-abrasive cloth
  • Microfibre cloths
  • Spray bottle
  • Vacuum cleaner with soft brush nozzle

Firstly, always avoid using bleach to deep clean uPVC as it can discolour and damage it.

Open the windows and doors as wide as possible and remove any excess dirt by carefully hoovering every part. Add pure distilled white vinegar to the spray bottle and spray it on the dirtiest areas of the uPVC and leave it to soak for 5-10 minutes. Gently wipe away the vinegar with a clean, non-abrasive cloth and then with another soft cloth, wipe the frames over with clean warm water. Gently dry the uPVC with a re-usable microfibre cloth and you should be left with fresh uPVC frames.

  1. Crystal clear double glazinggrey flush casement windows

  2. You will need:
    • Large bucket/bowl
    • 2 cups warm water
    • ½ cup of white vinegar
    • ¼ cup rubbing alcohol (70% concentration)
      g. good quality anti-bacterial hand sanitizer
    • Spray bottle
    • Newspaper/microfibre cloths

It’s important to pick a dry, cloudy day to deep clean your double or triple glazing, as the sun will dry your cleaning solution prematurely and leave stubborn streaks.

Lightly dip some old newspaper or a microfibre cloth into the cleaning solution, outlined above. Attentively using a circular motion, carefully wipe the glass to remove unsightly smears and dirt.
